Green IT: opportunities and challenges for companies

Digital transformation is at the heart of every business. So are the challenges of sustainability. Digital pollution is growing exponentially. Sustainability challenges are increasingly ambitious.

In a context where digital and environmental strategies are often not aligned, how can IT strategies meet organizations' climate objectives?

The main challenge lies in understanding the problem. What is digital pollution? Is it that important for a company? For a service company, digital pollution can account for up to 40% of its total footprint.

As a result, over 100 companies in Europe are already on the road to Green IT and have been certified with the international Sustainable IT label.

In this keynote, we will take a closer look at what digital pollution is, what it means for companies, and what the first steps are in measuring digital impact and defining a Green IT strategy.

Sovereign DBaaS: A practical vision for self-implementation of DBaaS

IaaS and DBaaS solutions revolutionized application development by offloading operational burden and providing a low-commitment consumption commercial model. But, they are not without their limitations; e.g., lack of workload access and portability, and recent controversy around security events and reliability.

Severalnines CEO Vinay Joosery envisions a different future. In his presentation, Vinay will trace the history of Cloud and DBaaS, highlighting their key developmental stages through to today and making a case for the reconceptualization of cloud and DBaaS as operating and implementation models that are independent of providers.

He’ll address the current model’s disadvantages, e.g. managed license instability, vendor, environment and ecosystem lock-in, high costs at scale and increasing regulatory scrutiny. He’ll propose his vision for its next stage, Sovereign DBaaS, which will return control to DevOps teams by providing them control through workload access and portability.

He’ll move from the theoretical to the practical, providing advice on the concepts, frameworks, deployment patterns, and orchestration tooling needed to accomplish this, as well as a sample architecture and real-world case study of how ABSA is successfully putting the implementation model into practice with their 3000+ node hybrid environment in a highly regulated environment.

Attendees will leave the talk with a good idea of what implementing a Sovereign DBaaS looks like using alternative infrastructure schemes and providers, open-source and source-available databases, provisioning and config management tooling and off-the-shelf orchestration platforms to leverage the strengths of the traditional models without suffering their trade-offs.

Can the modern Frankenstein pass the Turing test?

RAGs, GAI, LLMs etc are all the rage, but are they any good at answering Database or SQL problems? Would you like to talk to Jonathan Lewis, Tim Hall (oracle-base.com) or other Oracle Experts without actually talking to them? Well build and use RAG & LLM using different sources, and explore if it is as good as the Real Thing.

Does ChatGPT write better SQL than human intelligence?

ChatGPT can be a great help for programming, also in SQL. In this session we have a bunch of questions that we want to answer with SQL queries based on a given data structure. Andrea solves them with the help of ChatGPT, Dani uses his own brain. This way we can find out how to prompt ChatGPT to provide helpful code. We also will see how the code can be easily adapted to our own data.

Say Goodbye to Information Chaos

Knowledge workers are vital to the success of almost any business. Forward-thinking organizations. should harness their ability to absorb information, draw insights, and share new knowledge globally. However, most knowledge workers waste valuable time trying to locate information or performing routine, manual tasks that distracts from more fulfilling, value-added work. Today, leading companies leverage knowledge work automation, powered by generative AI, to improve tasks, processes, and actions that previously required human interaction. They also leverage AI to allow knowledge workers to deeply interact with their data using natural language, which makes information discovery smoother and more efficient.

Mental health: predicting and measuring accidents andrecoveries

Mental health and its matching pendants of motivation and productivity are primesubjects in today's workplace, and this even more so in a post-COVID era.

While this subject is often talked about in private and more rarely in public circles, it is oftenmanaged in an unmeasuredand unscientific approach.

In a conference like this, I would like to propose a structured, measurable and repeatable way to tackle these issues.

After discovering my personal journey, we will learn and use a full toolset and its outcomes to be able tomeasure each workplace.
